How To: Turn a Samsung Galaxy S4 into a Remote Control for Netflix & Other Desktop Programs
One of the coolest features that Samsung built into the Galaxy S4 is the infrared (IR) blaster and WatchON software to control your television. I've been using my GS4 for the past few weeks to control my DirecTV setup and it works great. Smartphones are truly becoming all-in-one devices these days.But what if you don't have a TV to control? With the advent of Netflix and other streaming media providers, many people are eschewing traditional TV to cut costs. Who can blame them? Netflix has enough content to choose from to substitute satellite TV for a fraction of the cost.While you won't be able to utilize your GS4's IR blaster, you can still turn it into a remote to control Netflix video playback on your PC from across the room. Step 1: Install Easy PC ControlTo turn your GS4 into a remote control, we'll be using Easy PC Control, available for free on the Google Play Store. The developer, CrashApps, created this app because he was sick of getting up out of his bed to stop YouTube videos. This app is also compatible on other Android phones 2.2 (Froyo) or above, so it's a great mod to re-purpose an older phone you may have lying around.
Step 2: Install Java on Your PCIf you have it already, great. If not, you can download it from here, then run the installer. The desktop interface of the Easy PC Control (which we'll install in the next step) requires Java to run, so don't proceed without it!

Step 3: Install Easy PC Control Server onto Your PCDownload the following file onto your computer.EasyPcControl.jar This is the companion software to the Android app which will help your phone communicate with your desktop (compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux). You don't need to run an installer or anything, just click on it from your Downloads folder (or wherever your browser saves downloaded files) whenever you want to run it. Step 4: Connect the App to Your DesktopMake sure your GS4 and desktop computer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Then, open the app up on your GS4 and it will start searching for your computer. Once it's done, your router's IP address should show up. Tap on the Connect button.

Step 5: Get to Know the InterfaceThis app is very simple to use—there are only two screens, and you can just swipe right and left to navigate.
First ScreenThe first screen is a touch pad to control mouse movement, with mouse buttons and a space bar at the bottom. You can also tap the keyboard icon if you need to type something.
Second ScreenSwipe to the right to reveal the second screen, which has:Volume control Mute toggle Screen off/on buttons Suspend (puts computer to sleep) Shutdown Alt and tab buttons Speech recognition You can use speech recognition in lieu of the keyboard if you prefer to dictate text. This feature is in experimental stages right now, only working on Windows. You may experience a few bugs, but it's worked fine for me.
Step 6: Open Up Netflix on Your DesktopOr whichever program you'd like to be able to control. Your Galaxy S4 can now control your PC from across the room. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy Netflix on your desktop without having to get up.

So even though the V20 has received plenty of praise for its overall audio experience, that single built-in speaker ruins the fun by putting out some shoddy and cheap-sounding audio.Many developers have tried to improve the audio quality with software tweaks to no avail. A few users even managed to completely blow out their speaker in the process. But as it turns out, the problem with the V20's speaker wasn't a software issue after all, and instead, it's a matter of the speaker grille impeding the sound. What You'll NeedLG V20 Phillips #00 screwdriver (PH00) SIM card removal tool or a pair of tweezers

Step 1: Remove the BatteryFirst, open up the back panel of your LG V20 by pressing the release button on the bottom-right side of your device. Step 2: Unscrew & Remove the Bottom ChinNext, you'll need to remove four screws so you can pull off the plastic chin piece on the bottom of your V20. Use your screwdriver to remove them and carefully place them aside. Don't lose any, as you'll be putting them back in shortly. Images by Kevin M./Gadget Hacks Once all four screws are out, pull off that bottom chin. You might have to put some force into it, as the chin is held in place by clasps as well.

Step 3: Remove the Plastic Speaker GrilleUsing either your SIM removal tool or your tweezers, poke out or pull off the little plastic grille covering the speaker cutout on the bottom chin. This is what will make all of the difference in audio quality, as it was previously muffling the sound. When you're done, make sure to clean off any residual glue. In a letter dated February 16th, Apple CEO Tim Cook responded to the FBI's demand that Apple create a "backdoor" to bypass the encryption on an iPhone used by one of the perpetrators of last year's terrorist attack in San Bernardino, CA. Cook began the letter by stating that Apple has "no sympathy for terrorists" and has cooperated in giving the FBI all of the information that it has available.However, Cook says that Apple itself does not have technology that could bypass iOS encryption, and that creating such a backdoor has the potential to compromise the security of all iOS users, and is not a step the company is willing to take.The U.S. government claims that it's only interested in the bypass for this specific phone—a work phone used by Syed Rizwan Farook—and not any others, which, uh... well, you all know what laughter sounds like.
Information in the Government's HandsEven if the government has no honest intentions of using an iOS backdoor for nefarious purposes, it's pretty hard to believe that such sensitive material wouldn't wind up in the wrong hands—especially considering its history keeping track of laptops with classified information, firearms, and nuclear weapons.You also have to wonder if there's even anything important on Farook's work iPhone. Farook and his wife/accomplice, Tashfeen Malik, destroyed their personal phones to the point that any data was unrecoverable, and a hard drive from the couple's computer is still missing. Sure, it's possible that there's evidence on the work iPhone, but the odds seem low considering the steps these two went through to destroy other evidence.

What's the FBI After?What the FBI is demanding is basically an override of iOS's passcode encryption. Currently, the system will wipe all data off the phone after 10 consecutive incorrect entries. The FBI wants this fail-safe removed so that it can enter passcodes electronically and at high speeds, to "make it easier to unlock an iPhone by 'brute force,' trying thousands or millions of combinations with the speed of a modern computer," said Cook.Once the encryption is breached, the FBI could access an iPhone, and the "government could extend this breach of privacy and demand that Apple build surveillance software to intercept your messages, access your health records or financial data, track your location, or even access your phone's microphone or camera without your knowledge," Cook writes. Given its track record, there's basically no way to believe that the United States government wouldn't meddle with such powerful technology.On the other hand, you can argue that having remote access to smartphones would come in handy when trying to snuff out potential terror threats. But considering the attention this is receiving, you'd be stupid to think that terrorists, or anyone else with malicious intentions, would continue using smartphones at all, knowing that law enforcement could be watching them at any or every moment.You'll probably hear some noise about how Tim Cook and Apple are enabling terrorists by refusing the FBI's demands, but that's going too far. If you want to get cynical about it, Cook's statement is as much about principle as it is about retaining Apple's customer base (and maybe even using this protest win new customers).But Cook's outlook is correct. The government's argument is paradoxical—it demands that we relinquish our security, so that we may be more secure. Hopefully the other tech giants (I'm looking at you Google) join in the fight to protect our data.UpdateSundar Pichai, CEO of Alphbet's Google, has chimed in (though we were hoping for more). There's a lot of talk going around about Google's new social network and how it's heavily influenced by Facebook, but truth be told, how could they build Google+ without taking a noteor two from the world's most popular social network? One thing that's different (and better) about Google+ is its ability to create "Circles" of friends by just dragging and dropping them from your list of friends to the group you want.To make friend lists in Facebook, right now the easiest way is to click on the "Account" drop-down menu, select "Edit Friends" and then click on the "Create a List" button. From there, you choose your group's name and find and select your friends in the pop-up window and click on "Create List" to finalize it.To make the process easier, four engineers from Facebook have teamed up to bring you a non-official tool called Circle Hack, which harnesses the power of Google Circles. To get started, just go to the Circle Hack website, log in to Facebook, and give the application permission to access your friends. Once done, you'll see a webpage horizontally split in two; the top half shows your entire friend list and the bottom half contains your "circles", where you can add to current groups or create new ones.To create a new circle of friends, you can simply drag and drop a friend into the "Create New List" circle. While you can't hold down the Home button any longer, there's a new method that's just as quick.Apple wouldn't ditch the Home button and all of its features without designing a new system equally as good. With the iPhone X last year, this new system came in three parts — Face ID, gestures, and the Side button. "Hey Siri" gets the job done. Of course, if you prefer not to say "Hey Siri" out loud, you'll want to know how to activate Siri silently.Luckily, it's no more complicated than it was on your old iPhone. Simply press and hold on the Side button, which is sometimes referred to as the power button or sleep/wake button. After a split-second, Siri will pop right up. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks If Type to Siri is enabled, this action will pull up the keyboard, allowing you to type your questions to Siri rather than speak them. If you want to talk to Siri, you'll have to tap the dictation icon in your keyboard, which will, in turn, write your question down for you to ask. Speak to Siri vs. Type to Siri There is one drawback with remapping Siri to a physical button, one that the iPhone 7 seemingly solved. It's now much easier to accidentally activate Siri, just as it is with Home buttons for the iPhone 6S and earlier. Be careful how you carry your new XS, XS Max, or XS — you don't want to set off Siri in the wrong environment.But that's not all that's new with Siri on your new iPhone — it's running iOS 12, which means you gain access to the digital assistant's 11 brand new updates.
