How To: Jump to the Bottom or Middle of a Page on Your iPhone, Not Just the Top
When surfing the web in Safari, you can double-tap the status bar to quickly scroll back up to the top any webpage. In other iOS apps that have the shortcut enabled, you can get the job done even faster by tapping the status bar only once. The only bad thing about this feature is that there's no shortcut for scrolling all of the way back down or to the middle.Fortunately, there is a way to create your own shortcut gesture that will make reaching the middle and bottom of a page just as easy as reaching the top. For this to work, you will need to have a jailbroken iOS device. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Install ActivatorIf you're new to jailbreaking and haven't heard of the Activator tweak, then make sure to check out our complete Activator guide to familiarize yourself and get it installed.

Step 2: Install TapToScroll for ActivatorTo gain the ability of easy scrolling, open up Cydia, then search for and install the free tweak from developer Ron Thakrar called TapToScroll for Activator.

Step 3: Choose Your GesturesEnter the your iPhone's Settings app and select TapToScroll's preferences. Once there, tap one of the actions and select an Activator assignment for it. To keep things consistent, I stuck with actions in the status bar. You'll need to redefine the "Scroll to Top" gesture again, though, because this tweak will disable it. You can always make it a double-tap for familiarity.

Step 4: Start Scrolling FasterWith your actions chosen, enjoy scrolling any page even faster that you could before. Not only can you get to the top super fast, now you can get to the middle or the bottom of a page at the same speed. Let us know how the tweak helped you out by commenting below, and don't forget to keep up with us over on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter for more cool jailbreak tweaks like this one.

Google Chrome 101: How to Unlock the Material Design 2 User Interface with Round Icons & Blended Status Bar

Google Chrome 101: How to Unlock the Material Design 2 User Interface with Round Icons & Blended Status Bar
Google's been using their "Material Design" look in Android for years now, but a change is coming up with "Material Design 2," their updated version focusing on new colors, icons, and spacing. Whether it'll be called "Material Design 2" or not remains to be seen, but you can try it out right now in Google Chrome on your Android device right now.The new user interface design is being referred to as "Modern Design" right now inside Chrome, and it features rounded corners for certain elements such as the URL bar and icons, the status bar blends in perfectly with the current webpage's color, and there's a slightly revamped tab switcher. You can expect this look to be pushed out to the stable version of Chrome sometime in the near future as the default look, but until then, you can unlock it right now on Android phones and tablets.Previously, you had to install the beta, developer, or canary version of Chrome in order to unlock this feature, but the stable version of Chrome can now access it too — just make sure your Chrome version is 66.0 and higher. If you're still running a 65.0 build of Chrome, you'll need the beta, dev, or canary version instead.Don't Miss: How to Install the Chrome Beta Browser on iPhone & Android

Step 1: Enable the Hidden FlagOpen up Chrome on your smartphone, then find the "Chrome Modern Design" option in Chrome's flags menu. You can reach the flags menu by going to chrome://flags in the URL bar, then you can search for "Chrome Modern Design" from there. Alternatively, you can just go directly to the right flag with chrome://flags/#enable-chrome-modern-design. Under the option, tap on the drop-down menu that says "Default," then select "Enabled."

Step 2: Relaunch Chrome (Twice)Afterward, tap on "Relaunch Now." After relaunching Chrome, you might not notice a change right away, and that's because this tweak actually requires you to restart Chrome twice. So close out Chrome from your app switcher, then open it back up, and you should see the new look right. Because this is currently in the Beta channel, you can expect it to roll out to the stable version of Chrome in the near future. Keep in mind that if you have a variety of non-stable channels installed on your Android phone, you'll need to enable the look for each if you want.

What Changes to Look Out ForTo give you an idea of what you'll be getting with the new "Modern Design" or "Material Design 2" look in Chrome, here's what a webpage looks like with and without it enabled. You can see the status bar is the same color as the page's color now, the URL bar is rounded, and the tab icon is also rounded. Before applying the Material Design 2 look (left) and after (right). As for the tab switcher, it now has a white background (that also blends in with the status bar) instead of black, and the tabs button is rounded, just like as above. Before applying the Material Design 2 look (left) and after (right). They aren't huge changes to the UI, but the changes are just enough to keep me happy. I actually hope this will be becoming the default look sooner rather than later, but only time will tell.Don't Miss: How to Enable Chrome's Home Page Button on Any Android PhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Sideload Apps on the Nexus Player

How To: Sideload Apps on the Nexus Player
The Nexus Player is one of the most robust set-top streaming devices on the market. This is mainly due to the fact that the base software it runs is a direct fork of Android, which is a very powerful operating system itself.Much like an Android smartphone, apps and games can be sideloaded on the Nexus Player. This means that even if an app is not available through the Google Play Store, it can still be installed via alternate sources.Sideloading apps on the Nexus Player is a relatively easy process once you've got everything set up, and a Bluetooth mouse would be helpful for this process, which I'll outline below. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Enable "Unknown Sources"To begin, there are a couple of options that you'll need to enable. From the Nexus Player's home screen, head to the Settings menu. After that, click the "About" entry, then scroll down to the bottom of the list. Next, click "Build Number" 7 times in rapid succession to enable an advanced set of developer options on the device. With that done, back out one level and find the "Security & Restrictions" menu. In here, select "Unknown sources," and set the option to "On."

Step 2: Install ES FIle ExplorerNow that your Nexus Player is ready to for sideloading, you'll need a file management app to handle the installer files. From any device with a web browser, head to the Play Store to begin. Make sure that you're logged in with the same Google account as your Nexus Player, then search for an app called ES File Explorer. Click the "Install" button on this app's Play Store page, then make sure your Nexus Player is selected in the drop-down menu. Next, click "Install" one more time, then ES File Explorer will be installed on your Nexus Player within a few minutes.

Step 3: Add a Cloud Storage Account to ES FIle ExplorerBack on the Nexus Player, head to the Settings menu again. This time, go to the "Apps" submenu, then click the new entry for ES File Explorer and choose "Open." This is where a Bluetooth mouse will come in handy, since the file browser is not optimized for use on the TV. Use the side navigation menu in ES to select "Network," then "Cloud." From here, click the "+ New" button at the bottom of the screen, then choose your favorite cloud storage service from the list. After that, simply type in your account credentials for this cloud storage service, then you'll see all of the files that you've uploaded. If you've already uploaded an APK installer file to your cloud storage account, simply launch it and click "Install" to add this app to your Nexus Player. This is how future APK sideloading will work as well.

Step 4: Getting APK Files to SideloadTo sideload apps, you'll need their associated APK installer files. There are several different sources you can use to procure these types of Android installer files, but always make sure you're downloading from a trusted source. One of the best places to find APKs is this thread on XDA. Registered users can search and request app installer files there, but note that paid apps are not shared.Another great source is APKMirror. New versions of many free Android apps are uploaded to this site on a daily basis, and you can simply upload the files to your cloud storage to install them on your Nexus Player. Finally, if you own a rooted Android device, you can generate your own APKs. Just use any root-enabled file browser to navigate to the "/data/app/" folder on your device to begin. From here, locate the APK file for any app you have installed on your system, then long-press it. Depending on your file browser, select "Send" or "Share" from the menu. Next, choose any installed cloud service app from the menu, then tap "Add" or "Upload" to send the APK to the cloud. Now you can simply open the ES File Explorer app on your Nexus Player and launch the APK directly from your attached cloud account, so sideloading apps couldn't be any easier.A few of my favorite apps that I've sideloaded are MX Player for video, StickMount for expandable storage, and TeamViewer to mirror my desktop on my TV.What apps have you sideloaded on your Nexus Player? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

How To: Satisfy Your Craving for Brains with These 10 Free Zombie Games for iPad, iPhone, & iPod Touch

How To: Satisfy Your Craving for Brains with These 10 Free Zombie Games for iPad, iPhone, & iPod Touch

Halloween is right around the corner, so it's only right that we get into the holiday mood with my favorite revenant creatures of the night—zombies (or zombis, if you prefer). So, if you're licking your lips over wearing that gruesome living dead Halloween costume of yours this year, a zombie movie marathon could help curb your flesh-eating appetite, but you can't really watch zombie flicks everywhere you go.What's the next best way to suppress your hunger for brains? Zombie games, and here are my top ten free zombified iOS games on my iPhone right now. Some of them may offer in-app purchases, but for the most part, you can play these without ever spending a dime.

#1. Into the DeadNot your typical zombie game, Into the Dead is an endless runner version, with very impressive graphics, that allows you to pick up crates full of guns and ammo to use on the undead. As you earn points (for distance and kills), you'll be able to purchase perks before each run— armed starts, ammo boost, dog companion, and more. Notable Mention: If you want another runner, check out Running Dead, which is very similar except that there's an aerial view as you run through an abandoned town of zombies.

#2. Dead TriggerThis first person shooter features all the blood and gore you'll ever need, as well as a large arsenal of weapons. As you progress through the levels in Dead Trigger, you'll earn money to buy weapons, ammunition, and health. You can enjoy the regular story mode or take on random missions, but whatever you pick, you'll be sure to encounter a load of zombies to kill.

#3. Age of Zombies LiteAs all around bad-ass commando Barry Steakfries, you'll travel back to prehistoric times in this arcade shooter game. In Age of Zombies Lite, you'll not only have to kill hordes of pesky zombies—you'll also have to take on an undead boss T-Rex. There is also a pro version of Age of Zombies for $0.99, which gives you more levels, but the lite version should be good enough to hold you over until Halloween ends.

#4. Contract Killer: ZombiesAs a contract killer, your job as a wheelchair-ridden old guy is to protect survivors at all cost and kill the zombies in the way. As you play on in Contract Killer: Zombies, you'll be given an arsenal of sniper rifles, assault guns, and grenade launchers. There is also a sequel available, if you dig it that much.

#5. Plants vs. Zombies 2Sequel to the original tower-defense strategy game, Plants vs. Zombies 2 takes you back in time to fight ancient zombies, with your legion of killer plants. As you push through the game, you'll be able to collect power-ups as well as brand new plants and zombies.

#6. Zombie HighwayAs you drive down the barren desert in Zombie Highway, your only objective is to survive and drive as far as you can. It won't be easy, as zombies will pounce on your car as you drive near them, so you'll either have to knock em off or shoot em off. With patience, you'll rack up better weapons, faster cars and deadlier zombies. There is also a Zombie Highway: Driver's Ed, a spinoff of Zombie Highway, but unfortunately it's not free.

#7. Gunner ZStorm through the infected city with a heavy duty armored Hummer in Gunner Z, blasting the mutant zombie soldiers with an arsenal of machine guns and bombs, all with a night vision view to match.

#8. Call of Mini: SniperPerched behind a protective barrier in Call of Mini: Sniper Lite, you can shoot down zombies in different terrains such as schools, carnivals, and playgrounds. Save the humans and get them into safety as you hold the horde off. If the zombies get to you, it's all over. The lite version has some limitations, but lucky for you, the Call of Mini: Sniper pro version is currently free, so make sure to grab it before the deal ends.

#9. Dead AheadReminiscent of old arcade games, Dead Ahead follows you as you ride through the undead streets on a motorcycle, taking on hordes of zombies at a time. The longer you play, the more you can upgrade your bike and weapons, making the ride to hell a bit easier.

#10. The Walking DeadJust like the TV show, The Walking Dead game has consequences to every action you take. As you progress through, you'll be asked to make quick decisions that can impact not only your life, but that of others. While the first chapter of the game is free, you'll have to purchase the rest if you want to continue playing. And trust me, you will.
What Are Your Favorite Zombie Games for iOS?If you think I didn't show a game that should have been mentioned, let me know in the comments. There are a lot of zombie games for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, but these ten were by far my favorite free ones.

How To: Top 10 Free First-Person Shooter Games for Your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch
Whether it's terrorism or brain-hungry zombies you're neutralizing, first-person shooters are an awesome way to immerse yourself within a new world and kill some time with your iPad or iPhone. And with so many games available in this genre, we wanted to show off ten of our absolute favorites. While all the games in this list are free to download, they also include in-app purchases that help make the game easier. That being said, none of these "freemium" features hindered the overall gameplay — in most cases, it was a lot of fun earning upgrades through play rather than paying for them.So grab your iPad or iPhone and get ready to play — here's our list of ten (mostly) free FPS games in no particular order.Don't Miss: The 3 Best Gaming Phones Ranked

#1. Sniper 3D Assassin: Shoot to KillSniper 3D is a game that I avidly play and can enjoy without ever paying for a single upgrade. It's essentially a Deer Hunter-like game, only with criminals instead of Bambi. Some of the more exotic guns will require an in-app purchase, but there are enough free options and achievable upgrades to let that slide.Install Sniper 3D for free from the iOS App Store

#2. Clear Vision 3Like Sniper 3D, Clear Vision 3 is an assassin game, but on a minimal scale. Replacing characters with funny stick figures, Clear Vision can be graphic, but in a humorous way. The missions are unique and weapons are fully customizable.Install Clear Vision 3 for free from the iOS App Store

#3. Gun Club 3Gun Club 3 is sure to tickle even the most discriminating firearm enthusiast's fancy. The game features a vast array of modern firearms that you can collect, upgrade, and use — from Beretta M9 pistols all the way up to AWP sniper rifles. Gun Club 3 brilliantly eliminates graphic violence by focusing on gameplay that simulates being in a gun range for competitive shooting. Don't let the setting fool you though, as it's very action packed with numerous scenarios, like scoot-and-shoot, and zombie hunts that add tremendously to its replay value.Install Gun Club 3 for free from the iOS App Store Don't Miss: Test Drive 'Death Road to Canada' for Free on Your iPhone Before Purchasing

#4. Deer Hunter 2017It'd be hard to make this list without including this one. Unlike the other shooters on this list, Deer Hunter requires a little more skill, asking you to make lung, heart, or head shots on different occasions. The game also has "Trophy Hunt" levels that require you to hunt exotic, sometimes dangerous animals, like the White Rhino.Install Deer Hunter 2017 for free from the iOS App Store

#5. Pixel Gun 3DIf you love Minecraft and terminating supernatural beings like ghosts, skeletons, and zombies, then Pixel Gun 3D was made for you. The look of the game is heavily influenced by the stylings and graphics of Minecraft, but the objective is different: Kill all the monsters!Install Pixel Gun 3D for free from the iOS Apps Store

#6. N.O.V.A. 3: Freedom EditionFor an intergalactic, sci-fi action-adventure, look no further than N.O.V.A. 3. The game is packed with intense action, futuristic guns, unique powers — this one seriously looks like it was made for a gaming console and a big screen, but is perfect for a mobile device.Install N.O.V.A. 3 for free from the iOS App Store

#7. Dead EffectYou wake up in a dark and desolate spacecraft, your shipmates are gone, and zombies are running wild. Dead Effect is essentially the film Aliens, but with the living dead. It's fun, scary, and entertainingly gory. There's also a cool feature that allows you to regain full health by standing in a medical pod, so gameplay is more or less continuous.Install Dead Effect for free from the iOS App Store

#8. Fields of BattleFields of Battle is a great alternative if you're searching for something with less gruesome content. Replacing rifles with paintball guns, bullets with paintballs, and blood with paint — it's great for all ages, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's easy because this game relies on longer distant shots and team strategies.Install Fields of Battle for free from the iOS App Store

#9. Overkill: SurvivalOverkill is great because of its simplicity and ease of gameplay. The game requires you to solely focus on the gun, keeping your character stationary as enemies pop their heads out for you to shoot. In all honesty, it's like one of those old shooting arcade games you might've played while waiting for a movie in the theater's lobby.Install Overkill: Survival for free from the iOS App Store

#10. Blitz BrigadeFor those who need to scratch their Team Fortress 2 itch in mobile form, here's a great alternative. Blitz Brigade is a multiplayer FPS that closely resembles Valve's timeless game. Players can join matches that can go up to a maximum of 6-on-6, depending on the map. There are a total of five character classes can be unlocked through progression, and too many weapons to count that can be purchased and equipped.Install Blitz Brigade for free from the iOS App Store First-person shooters are immensely fun, but remember to check out our top 10 free zombie games for all you George A. News: No Wallet, No Problem! Now Pay for Parking with Your Phone in NYC

News: No Wallet, No Problem! Now Pay for Parking with Your Phone in NYC
Paying for street parking in New York City just got so much easier. Instead of searching for loose change or hoping you didn't forget your wallet, you can use a device you always have with you: your phone. This change comes courtesy of Park NYC, a new initiative from the Department of Transportation that lets you pay for parking from your phone. It was previously only available in certain parts of the city, but that's recently changed. Queens was just equipped with the service, so now people in all five boroughs can finally take advantage of Park NYC.Don't Miss: You Can Finally Hail and Share NYC's Iconic Yellow Taxis with AppsPark NYC has been conveniently rolled out to all 85,000 metered spots throughout New York City, meaning that you can use this service no matter where you are. Accessible via the app of the same name or through your mobile browser, the service is fairly easy to use. Users just have to fill out their account information, input where they parked, and determine how much time they want to pay for.You can connect one debit or credit card to the app, so the app's wallet automatically reloads when you start to run out of money. As opposed to uploading a customized amount, you're required to upload money in increments of at least $25. There's also no discount for using the app, meaning that meter rates are the same regardless of whether you pay in cash or via Park NYC.Since there's no ticket to print out and display on your dashboard, you may be thinking that there's no way traffic enforcement agents will know if you paid or not. Before you get too excited, know that your account is linked with your registered license plate number. Traffic enforcement agents can check to see if you've paid through their devices. If you've failed to input enough money and your meter runs out, they can — and likely will — issue you a ticket.Don't Miss: Is Streetview Coming to Apple Maps? NYC May Hold the AnswerFor tourists driving rental cars, you too can take advantage of Park NYC. The set-up is the same as if you were a resident of NYC. Note that, however, you must still load your account with at least $25, so if you intend on spending less than that it may be worth it to just use cash. The service is still fairly new, and it's not without its bugs. While the site reports that you're able to renew your parking from your phone to prevent the meter from running out, users have reported that the app doesn't let you. It apparently incorrectly claims that parking is free or that its unnecessary to input money, thus putting you at risk of getting a ticket. Moreover, it doesn't always recognize parking zones, making it impossible to use the app in certain parts of the city.Park NYC still needs to be worked on before I'll be willing to use it, but try it out for yourself if you're curious. It's free to get, so anyone who wants it can access it. The Park NYC app is available for both iOS and Android and works throughout the entire city. If you have a Blackberry or Windows device, you'll have to access the service through your mobile browser.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Back Up Your Gmail Account (5 Ways of Archiving Gmail Data)

How To: Back Up Your Gmail Account (5 Ways of Archiving Gmail Data)

Last weekend, some unlucky Gmail users inadvertently had their email accounts wiped out. Actually, it was 0.02 percent of all Gmail users—or roughly 40,000 of the 200 million who use the email service, due to an "unexpected bug" which affected copies of the data. Gmail does make backup files of everything, so eventually everyone will reclaim their email history. In fact, as of yesterday, Google has successfully restored all information from their backup tapes and has started returning everyone's data. But what if they didn't? What if they couldn't? What if everything you've been doing in Gmail, which could essentially be your whole life on the web, was erased—forever?Should you risk it?I wouldn't. And neither should you. Below are some of the options you can use to safeguard your Gmail emailing history.

Step 1: Desktop Email ClientsThere are a few options out there for desktop clients, but the top three would be Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird. Windows users will probably prefer Outlook, but it's not free. You need to purchase a copy of Microsoft Office to use it. Mac users can also use Outlook, by purchasing Microsoft Office for Mac. But for those of you looking for free options...Anyone who owns a Mac can use Apple Mail. If you're using Mac OS X, you have it pre-installed on your computer, meaning it costs nothing more than what you already paid. Plus, you can keep everything in sync on your other Mac computers. But Windows users cannot use this option, which brings us to...Thunderbird. This email client works on all systems and is totally free. And setting it up is a total breeze now with Thunderbird 3.1. Before, you needed to know your IMAP, SMTP, SSL/TLS settings, but now all you need to get started is your name, email address and password. Thunderbird will check their database for the appropriate settings. If you choose to set up these email clients manually, make sure you choose the best protocol for you. If you solely want a backup of your emails and nothing more, then POP is your protocol. It's strictly one-way communication to your email client, basically—read only. If you'd like two-way communication, then IMAP is what you want, because anything you perform in your email client will directly effect your Gmail account. For additional help, including step-by-step instructions and troubleshooting, checkout Gmail's help section for POP and IMAP.

Step 2: HotmailI'm not a big fan of Windows Live Hotmail, but I can't ignore its usefulness when it comes to a Gmail backup. It's free and is super easy to setup, because Hotmail really wants you to transfer your emails over to them for some reason. Just sign up for a Hotmail account, then head over to TrueSwitch, which is Hotmail's web interface for transferring over all of your existing Gmail emails. Enter in your Gmail address and password, along with your new Hotmail address and password, and TrueSwitch will copy all of your Gmails to Hotmail. Once you've transferred all of your emails, in order to keep syncing, you'll need to set up email forwarding in Gmail, which can be done by going to Mail Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP > Add a forwarding address.

Step 3: Strictly ForwardingHotmail lets you transfer all of your old Gmail emails to their service, then allows you to forward new ones. But a lot of other online email services do not offer the luxury of transferring old messages, though all will let you forward messages. If you have an email address, any email address, you can set up Gmail to forward all new messages to it using the instructions in Step 2. It only work for new messages, but it's better late than never, eh? If you're creating a new email specifically for this purpose, don't waste your money. Choose a free email service, like AOL Mail, Yahoo! Mail, GMX, Inbox.com, Mail.com, or Gawab (which means "letter" in Arabic). If you're a business user, you may want to use something like Zoho for two bucks a month.

Step 4: Paid ServicesIf you're more worried about your Gmail security than your financial security, you may want to go with a paid backup service. One choice is BackupMyMail. Once you sign up and authenticate your Gmail account, you no longer have anything to worry about, because BackupMyMail will do its magic. It might take a while for them to pull all of your past emails from Gmail's servers, but once they do, you have a great backup archive for safe keeping, which will update regularly. You can sign up for a free trial, which is a one-time update or go straight for one of the paid one-year services. They also have additional paid services for backup up blogs, online photos and your Twitter stream. One more place to try out is Backupify, which is an all-in-one archiving, search and restore service for the most popular online services, including Gmail, Google Apps, Facebook, Twitter and Picasa. As of right now, there's a free version with 2GB storage limit and a few paid choices with more options and storage, including nightly backups (in lieu of the free weekly backup version).
Step 5: Other OptionsThere's a few more options, including an older program called Gmail Backup (for Windows XP and Vista), something called Fetchmail (for you Unix-y techies knowledgeable in command-line) and getmail for all of you Linux users. If you know of any more options, tell us in the comments below.

How To: The Ultimate Guide to Customizing Your iPhone's Home Screen Without Jailbreaking

How To: The Ultimate Guide to Customizing Your iPhone's Home Screen Without Jailbreaking
Your iPhone is just that — yours. Why should your home screen look like everyone else's? While iOS, and by extension, Apple, famously locks its users into its way of doing things, there's a lot more room for customization than you'd think. Before you make the switch to Android, you might want to see what you can do with the iPhone you already have. We've compiled ten ways you can change your home screen to fit your needs. Whether you want to change the order of your apps, choose a custom icon for those apps, or hide folder and app names, you can do it with these steps. But that's not all you can do on iOS — check out our full guide for all the ways you can customize your iPhone, head to toe.More Info: The Ultimate Guide to Customizing Your iPhone
1. Swap Your App IconsDon't like the way your app icons look? Change them! While iOS doesn't come close to the flexibility Android offers in this respect, those on iPhone can still change the appearance of their app icons. In fact, some apps even offer their own options for users to choose from.Unfortunately, those apps are few and far between. On the flip side, many of the apps that offer this feature do so well, implementing multiple if not a suite of icons for users to swap in and out. We just wish more apps would support this option. It's now our quest to document every app that offers this feature into an ongoing list. Make sure to let us know in the comments if you know of an app we don't!Full List: Apps that Let You Change Their Home Screen Icons

2. Create Your Own App Icons with 'Bookmarks'Just because the list of apps that natively support icon swapping is small, doesn't mean you can't change the icons for your favorite apps. In fact, with a little elbow grease, you can change almost any app's icon to anything you want. You just need something called bookmarks. At first glance, bookmarks look just like apps. But they aren't — bookmarks are icons that will launch a corresponding application. Bookmark icons are also entirely customizable, meaning you can hide the original app away in a folder and display a bookmark with whatever icon you see fit.Keep in mind, this is more-or-less a roundabout solution for customizing your app icons — once you tap a bookmark, it will take a second to redirect to the app of your choosing, bypassing the usual flow iOS is known for. Bookmarks will also only work if you know the URL scheme for the app you're trying to redirect to. If you don't know it, you won't be able to connect the app to the bookmark.Full Guide: How to Customize Your App Icons Using Bookmarks

3. Download Pre-Made App Icons Using iSkinYou don't need to make your own bookmarks in order to find them on your iPhone. Instead, browse the icons that iSkin carries on its site. You'll find a wide variety of icons for the apps you already own, in all different styles. You can make the apps on your iPhone look like anything, you just need to download the icons first. You can browse individual app icons on iSkin, but you can also download themed packs. This saves a ton of time, especially if there's a specific theme you like for all of your compatible apps anyway.Full Guide: How to Theme Your Home Screen Apps with iSkin

4. Clean Up Your Home Screen with Apple ConfiguratorRearranging your home screen by dragging your apps one-by-one gets old. Fast. Rather than subjecting yourself to this tedious torture, try using Apple Configurator 2 for Mac. The app gives you a large overview of your iPhone's home screen and allows you to quickly make adjustments with your mouse.Full Instructions: Use Apple Configurator to Organize Your Home Screen

5. Grab & Move Multiple Icons at OnceIf you don't have a Mac, or if you'd prefer to keep home screen management to your iPhone, there are tips you can use to make arranging your apps much easier. Your iPhone now allows you to grab multiple app icons at the same time, exponentially simplifying the process of making sweeping changes to your home screen layout. You can even move these groups of icons across multiple pages, picking up more as you go.Full Guide: How to Move Multiple Home Screen Apps at Once Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

6. Hide Folder Names on Your Home ScreenIf you're someone who prefers a clean home screen, folders must bug the heck out of you. The white text below each folder can be aesthetically abhorrent, especially if you have multiple folders side-by-side. Unfortunately, iOS won't let you leave the text field blank when setting up a folder, so what are you to do?Thanks to iOS 12, there's now a workaround which will ensure each and every one of your folders shows up textless on your home screen. And we mean textless. Take a look at the comparison below. You won't find a hint of text underneath any folder.Full Guide: How to Hide Folder Names on Your Home Screen for Good

7. Hide App Icon Names on Your Home ScreenYou might be asking yourself, "If I can erase folder names, can I do the same for apps?" You can! All you need to do is follow the same steps, but make a bookmark for your app first.

8. Hide Your DockOn a Mac, you can hide the dock if you want to reclaim some screen real estate. Samsung Android Pie Update: Galaxy Devices Are Getting Better Edge Lighting

Samsung Android Pie Update: Galaxy Devices Are Getting Better Edge Lighting

As Samsung's very own take on Android 9.0 Pie, the newly-dubbed One UI (formerly Samsung Experience, and TouchWiz before that) comes with a slew of new features and redesigned elements for the Galaxy's interface. Many of the changes, like the redesigned native app icons, are readily apparent, but other features got subtle enhancements that greatly improve user friendliness. The Galaxy's Edge Lighting effects is one such feature that didn't get a major revamp with Android Pie. Instead, Samsung improved upon it by basically streamlining its settings and adding more options, which translates to enhanced accessibility overall.Don't Miss: Enable Samsung's New Dark Theme on Your Galaxy in Android Pie Before One UI, Edge Lighting was pretty limited in terms of accessing notifications. Though you could set it to leave quick replies to phone calls and messages using your phone's heart rate sensor, there wasn't much else you could do as far as interacting with the Edge Lighting notifications on your screen. With Android Pie, you can now act on Edge Lighting notifications through a series of gestures. There's now an option to enable "Edge Lighting interaction" that gives you the ability to access and view alerts like text messages, phone calls, and more straight from the feature. It's also worth noting that "Quick reply" has been moved from the three-dot menu page from Oreo to the feature's main settings page to make things a lot less confusing. (1) Updated Edge Lighting settings on Android Pie/One UI. (2) Edge Lighting settings on Android Oreo. As seen from the screenshots below, interacting with Edge Lighting alerts consist of a series of gestures. These gestures include tapping on the notification to go directly to the app, performing a sideways swipe gesture on the alert to quickly dismiss it, and doing a downward swipe from the notification to open the app as a popup window for multitasking. The most annoying aspect of Edge Lighting was how short the alert was, which made it incredibly easy to miss. Thankfully, Samsung has remedied this with One UI, and along with the familiar options for lighting effects, colors, transparency, and width, you now have the ability to adjust the feature's duration to ensure you never miss an Edge Lighting alert again. Overall, the updated Edge Lighting feature will make it a lot more appealing to use, largely due to the practical enhancements highlighted above. And with One UI officially out in the wild, we'll be on the lookout for more Android Pie features that's touched down on Galaxy devices, so be sure to check back often for updates. As always, post your comments below and share your thoughts.Don't Miss: All the Cool New Features & Changes in Android 9.0 PieFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Customize Your Galaxy S9 with Squeeze Gestures

How To: Customize Your Galaxy S9 with Squeeze Gestures
All the Android fans out there undoubtedly remember the squeeze gestures introduced with the HTC U11. Google continued the trend by bringing the gestures to the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Thanks to a brand new app, you can now enable similar squeeze actions on your Galaxy S9 or S9+, and even some older Samsung phones. The HTC U11 and Pixel 2 both have special sensors embedded in the hardware to detect pressure exerted when squeezing the sides of your phone. Luckily, you can use another sensor in your phone to achieve a similar end result. As first reported by XDA, the new app SideSqueeze uses the phone's barometric pressure sensor to detect squeeze gestures. In order for this to work, your phone must also have some type of water resistance rating, so that it is properly sealed.
CompatibilityTheoretically, this tutorial should apply to any device with a barometric pressure and water resistance, but we will focus on the Galaxy S9. It is worth noting that the developers of SideSqueeze only tested their app on the S8 and Note 8 running Nougat. We have independently verified that the app runs fine on both the Snapdragon and Exynos models of the Galaxy S9 and S9+.

Step 1: Install SideSqueezeTo start, grab the SideSqueeze app from the link below. After installing the app, open it and accept the required permissions. There are a few important steps to undertake in this initial setup process, so do not click through all of the prompts before reading ahead!Install SideSqueeze for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Enable SideSqueeze in Accessibility ServicesAfter accepting the required permissions, you will receive a popup box indicating that SideSqueeze needs access to Accessibility services. Tapping on OK will take you to the Accessibility Services page in Settings.Scroll down until you see the SideSqueeze label, tap on this tile and enable the switch on the following screen. This allows SideSqueeze to work its magic by reading the barometric pressure sensor and launching specific apps or actions. After enabling, tap on the back button a few times to return to the app.

Step 3: Remove SideSqueeze from Battery OptimizationNext, you will receive a popup explaining that SideSqueeze should be removed from Samsung's battery optimization to function properly. Tapping on OK will take you to the Settings page for battery optimization. At the top of the Settings page, select "All Apps" from the drop-down menu, then scroll down and verify that SideSqueeze is turned off. After completing this, tap back a few times to return to the app. If you're worried about battery drain with the app, we've noticed minimal drain in our several days of use (less than .05% per hour). The final popup you will encounter warns about excessive squeeze force. This should be obvious, but make sure you are careful when applying force to the sides of your smartphone. If the squeeze function does not appear to work properly, adjust the pressure threshold (discussed below).
Step 4: Adjust Pressure ThresholdBefore setting your custom squeeze apps and action, you should find the ideal pressure threshold for you and your device. It is worth mentioning that each device has a slightly different preferred grip when performing squeeze gestures. If you are using the Galaxy S9 or Note 8, it helps to curl your fingers around the sides when squeezing the phone. On the other hand, the S8 and S8+ prefer a more square squeeze, without curling of the fingers. With these guidelines in mind, use the meter at the top of the app's home page to test the pressure threshold. We have found that a pressure threshold between 10 and 12 is ideal for the Galaxy S9 devices.

Step 5: Enable Custom Home Screen Actions via ADB (Pro Only)One of the most useful features of SideSqueeze is the ability to enable custom actions from the home screen, separate from the action enabled while in other apps. In order to enable this, you need to execute a simple ADB command from the command line on your PC.If you're not familiar with ADB or the command line, we have an excellent guide for helping you install the necessary tools. After installing the ADB tools, open up the command window on your PC and type adb shell sh /sdcard/grant. When finished, you should now be able to set custom home screen actions and immersive mode in SideSqueeze.

Step 6: Tweak Settings for Better PerformanceThere are a few helpful settings to enable in SideSqueeze to improve performance. Tap the menu in the top-left corner of the app, and then tap on "Settings." Verify that "Disable SideSqueeze while in a call" and "Disable SideSqueeze while keyboard is open" are both selected. In addition to these options, you may also want to enable "Hold a wakelock for screen-off actions (uses battery)." This final setting does drain extra battery, but it also seems to improve recognition of squeeze gestures on the lock screen in our experience. It is worth testing to see if the wakelock drains too much battery for your liking.

Step 7: Set Your Custom Squeeze ActionsNow for the fun part. Navigate to the SideSqueeze home page and set your custom actions for both "Normal Squeeze" and "Long Squeeze." Each of these can be customized with different actions for Screen On, Homescreen Open (Pro Only), Lockscreen Open, and Screen Off.We have noticed that the LockScreen actions do not appear to work with the Always on Display enabled. There are numerous actions to choose from in each category, and you can enable even more by paying $1.99 for the Pro version of the app. In our testing, we found the Google Assistant and Recent Apps actions to be very convenient. Using squeeze gestures to control your phone takes a bit of getting used to, but can be very convenient if you perform certain actions multiple times throughout your day. While this functionality might not be everyone's cup of tea, the fact that developers added this feature to new devices using software is remarkable. Let us know in the comments if the app works on your device, and tell us what you think of the functionality!Don't Miss: 5 Relatively Hidden Galaxy S9 Features You Should Know About!Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard
