How To: Take Selective Focus Pics & Shoot 4K Videos on Your Galaxy S5
Smartphone manufacturers strive to craft the most powerful cameras they can, but are limited to using hardware that will conform to small form factors. In most cases, the cameras end up fairly underwhelming, unless we're talking about the 41-megapixel shooter in the Nokia Lumia. But the new Galaxy S5 is changing things, sporting an improved 16-megapixel camera with a load of useful features. Samsung's latest is not only a top-tier smartphone, it's a first-class camera to boot.In this softModder guide, I'm going to show you how to use two of the more touted features for the Galaxy S5's camera—the ability to shoot ultra definition 4K videos and take selective focus camera shots.
Note About the "Camera Failed" WarningSadly, some Galaxy S5 cameras (mainly the Verizon variants) are plagued with a "fatal flaw" that happens when launching the camera. Users have reported seeing a "Warning: Camera Failed" message, and it essentially means the camera is dead and needs to be physically replaced. At present, customers with this issue should report it to their carrier and will most likely receive a replacement device.

Shooting Ultra High Definition 4K Video1080p is so 2013. With 4K recording (or 2160p), you'll have twice the resolution than you would with 1080p, offering a huge step up in pixel density for smartphone screens. To record a video in 4K, you'll also have to enable it from the camera settings. Tap on Video size and select UHD 3840x2160 (16:9). Recording in UHD takes a lot of processing power. After making the selection, you'll receive a prompt that goes through a few of the features that won't work when 4K video enabled, such as dual camera mode and HDR. Select OK to continue. Record your video just as you normally would. With 4K, you'll only be able to record five minutes at a time, due to the large file sizes of each video. When you're recording, you'll see the size of your current video in the top right corner underneath the time recorded. As you can see, using over a gig of memory for a little over three minutes of recording, you probably won't want to record all of your videos in 4K, since they'll quickly take up a substantial amount of your storage. Below you can check out my 4K recording and see how crisp and clear videos look in 2160p. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Make sure you hit the cog icon to select 2160p 4K for the quality and allow it to buffer properly.

Shooting in Selective Focus Picture ModeSelective focus allows you to focus on an important object in either the foreground or background while blurring the other and detailing the important object for a more definitive photograph. This is a feature that is hot right now, and both the new HTC One M8's Duo Camera and Google's new Camera app have it.Directly from the Camera application, tap on the gear icon in the top left corner in order to access the camera settings. Tap on Selective focus to enable it and go back to the camera viewfinder. When shooting, make sure that you have an object clearly in the foreground that is distinguishable from the background and is less than 1.5 feet from your camera. Once that's all set up, focus on the object and snap your picture. To refocus your picture, go to your photo gallery and tap on the selective focus icon at the top left of your image. You'll see three different focus options at the bottom of the picture: Near focus, Far focus, and Pan focus. Near focus (right screenshot below) is the default result, showing a blurred background and clear foreground. Far focus turns things around, focusing the background and blurring the foreground. Finally, Pan focus will give you a clear, sharp image with no blurring whatsoever. Once you've decided on the picture you prefer, tap on Done. If for any reason you want to change the focus, you can always go back into the selective focus edit mode. Now you're armed and ready to use two of the best camera features on your new Galaxy S5. Shoot some 4K videos and take some selective focus pictures, then show them off in the comments below.

News: The Best New Features in the Essential Phone Oreo Update
Essential recently launched their Android Oreo Beta Program, open to all owners of their PH-1 flagship. We detailed a quick and easy method for installing the beta on your device. With every beta program, there are bound to be plenty of new features and a few bugs, as we found out with the Galaxy S8 Oreo Beta. Let's take a look at what's new with Android 8.0 on the Essential Phone.

Notification Channels & Notification DotsTwo big user-facing features in Oreo concern how you control and interact with notifications. Notification channels allow users to take granular control of their notifications and specify what type of alerts they receive for each category. We covered this topic in-depth in our Galaxy S8 Oreo Beta notification coverage, if you're interested in more detail.Notification Dots, on the other hand, are a simple visual alert that a notification is waiting in a certain app. One strange thing we've noticed on the Essential Phone, the dots do not adapt their color to the particular app icon. All of the notification dots on our PH-1 are green, in stark contrast to the multi-colored dots on the Pixel devices.

Night LightWhen Essential launched the PH-1 earlier this year, they omitted a pretty basic flagship feature: Night Mode. The most puzzling thing about this omission, Night Light is featured as part of "stock" Android on the Pixel devices. With the Oreo Beta, Essential added the option to minimize blue light when using your phone's screen at night. Users can set a custom schedule for Night Light and even change the intensity within Settings –> Display –> Night Light. It's nice to see Essential add this feature that benefits all users.

Colored Media NotificationsAdding a little more color to your notification shade is never a bad thing. In Android 8.0, Google brought colored media notifications into the fold. With these, apps like Spotify, Play Music, and Pocket Casts match their notification color to album art. While this doesn't add much functionality, it does provide additional aesthetic value to the UI.
Improved Fingerprint Gesture SupportNear the end of October, Essential rolled out a update that brought swipe gestures to the fingerprint sensor. This features works basically the same as the Pixel devices, so a swipe down reveals the notification shade. The main downside of Essential's implementation is how buggy it was at launch. In the Oreo Beta build, the swipe gesture on the fingerprint sensor is much improved. We haven't had any issues with the gesture in the Beta, hopefully this stability will continue.

Picture-in-PictureWatching YouTube while scrolling Twitter is pretty awesome. With picture-in-picture in Android 8.0, you can accomplish exactly that. When watching a Youtube video, simply hit the home button to minimize your video and continue working in other apps. The same goes for a handful of other apps that have been updated to support the new feature, including VLC Player. Overall, Essential didn't add a ton of new user-facing features in their Oreo Beta build. In fact, many of the features we detailed are stock Oreo inclusions that have been tweaked slightly. This is much more of a stability update by Essential, and there it really shines. The overall UI scrolling and navigation smoothness have improved greatly. Combining these stability updates with the improved camera, the Essential Phone is now a great deal at the $449 price point. We will update this post if we find other new features, so let us know in the comments if you've noticed anything new!Don't Miss: Install the Oreo Beta Update on Your Essential PhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

News: Turn Your Android into a Workhorse with These 11 Productivity Apps

When you think of all the fun and games smartphones have to offer, it's easy to forget that they also make a great tool for getting things done. With utilities like document scanners, calendars, to-do lists, office apps, and password managers, that little computer you carry around in your pocket has the potential to increase your productivity levels in all aspects of life. But these types of apps don't get as much press as their fun and exciting counterparts, which means finding the best ones can be hard sometimes. So for all of the procrastinators that need a little help getting started with a task, as well as all of the multitasking power users out there, I'll go over the most highly-recommended productivity apps for Android below.Don't Miss: The 16 Best Google Android Apps You Didn't Know About

1. CamScannerDigital files are far more convenient than their antiquated, paper-based counterparts, but the old method of printing things out is still commonly used. So if you've got a stack of paper-based documents that you would like to convert into more manageable digital files, give CamScanner a try.Install CamScanner for free from the Google Play Store The app is incredibly simple to use—just snap a photo of the original document, then CamScanner will automatically crop and convert the image into a high-contrast PDF file. From there, you can even add notes and run a character recognition analysis, which means you'll be able to search for specific terms in the document with any PDF reader.Don't Miss: The Best Document Scanning Apps for Android

2. Keepass2AndroidIf keeping track of your numerous passwords has become a hassle, Keepass2Android offers a great solution. It's an open-source app that stores your passwords using the well-established "KeePass" database format from popular desktop services, and its ability to sync with almost any cloud storage account means that you'll only have to set things up once to use the service on almost any device.Install Keepass2Android for free from the Google Play Store Using the app is incredibly simple, too. Just set a master password, then add passwords for your various sites and services. From there, when it comes time to log in, a notification will appear that allows you to quickly copy and paste the username and password. On top of that, Keepass2Android works with almost every Android browser, so you stand to save quite a bit of time with this one.

3. WPS OfficeWhen it comes to editing and creating office documents, there are quite a few options on Android. None of these, however, pack in as many features as WPS Office, while still managing to be lightweight and efficient with a total app size of 25 MB.Install WPS Office for free from the Google Play Store WPS Office is fully compatible with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel formats, and it can even handle PDF files. The interface manages to be quite powerful with its full set of editing features, while at the same time being simple enough to operate on a touch screen.

4. PocketBeing productive doesn't mean that you can't take time out and read interesting articles, but it does mean that you shouldn't be getting distracted while you're putting in work. If you come across an interesting site or article, but you don't have the time to check it out right now, Pocket makes it easy to save it for later.Install Pocket for free from the Google Play Store With the app installed, simply use Android's share menu and select Pocket when you stumble across an interesting article. From here, the article will instantly be saved to your list, so you can get back to being productive. Then, when you have some leisure time, simply open the Pocket app, where you'll be able to read the article in a format that suits your mobile display.

5. RenotifyWhen a thought randomly crosses your mind, it's important to be able to capture it quickly before you forget. There are many notes and to-do list apps for Android that can help with this, but none are as fast and intuitive as Renotify.Install Renotify for free from the Google Play Store The premise here is simple—whenever you need to remember something, just open the Renotify app. From here, your keyboard will already be up and running, so simply type in the reminder or to-do list item, then press "Create." From now on, you'll see a notification with your note or reminder at the top of every screen, and when you're ready to cross this item off your list, simply swipe the notification away.

6. TrelloWhen you have a lot of work on your agenda for the day, the sheer amount of stuff that needs to be done can be overwhelming. This leads to a sense of helplessness that is detrimental to productivity, so an app like Trello that takes an itemized approach to your daily workflow can be a great help.Install Trello for free from the Google Play Store Trello has a card-based interface with three main categories—To Do, Doing, and Done. When planning your day, simply add items to the To Do section, then swipe them over to the Doing section once you start working on them. That overwhelming feeling of a heavy workload should already be mitigated, but if not, it certainly will be once you swipe items over to the Done section. You can also add your own columns: just swipe left until you see the "Add list" button.

7. ProcrastinationWhen you're planning out a schedule for upcoming tasks or chores, you really only have two time frames to choose from—either today or at some point in the future. Sure, that's a pragmatic way to look at things, but an app called Procrastination proves that it's actually quite effective.Install Procrastination for free from the Google Play Store When you have a list of tasks that you'd like to take care of, open Procrastination and enter them under the Today tab. As you knock things out, simply check them off of your to-do list to get a sense of accomplishment—but when it starts to look like you bit off more than you could chew today, simply swipe tasks to the right to put them off until tomorrow.

8. ForestThis list proves that there are many ways you can increase your productivity levels by using your smartphone, but most of the time, your favorite handheld gadget is less of an asset and more of a distraction. So if your smartphone addiction is preventing you from getting work done, an app called Forest can help quite a bit with a unique incentive.Install Forest for free from the Google Play Store When you don't want to be distracted by your smartphone for a period of time, open Forest and set a timer. During this time, a virtual tree will start to grow, but it will only reach maturity if you leave Forest open in the foreground for the duration of your timer, with the screen either on or off. Leaving the app will cause your tree to die, but reaching your goal of smartphone-free time will permanently plant your tree in a virtual forest.

9. TimetableFor college students, one of the biggest hurdles on a path to productivity is keeping track of your day-to-day schedule. Unlike high school, classes are scattered throughout the day with intermittent downtime, so the need for a good schedule-tracking app like Timetable is definitely apparent.Install Timetable for free from the Google Play Store Timetable was created with college students in mind, so it syncs your schedule between Android devices, and there are several unique calendar views that help you see what's on your day's agenda. On top of that, Timetable will even silence your phone's ringer automatically during lectures, labs, and exams.

10. 7 WeeksAccording to best-selling author Charles Duhigg, getting rid of bad habits is a lot easier when you replace them with good ones. Forming a good habit takes time, though, and you'll need to stay motivated throughout this process. This is where the app 7 Weeks comes into play.Install 7 Weeks for free from the Google Play Store Start by setting a goal for yourself, then choose a day to start developing this new, productive habit. From there, you'll see a simple grid of 49 squares—these represent your 7-week path to forming this good habit. As you go, simply enter an "O" when you've had a slip-up, and an "X" on days you were successful, then the app will offer inspiration with progress statistics up until you've accomplished your goal.

11. Chrome Remote DesktopFor those tasks that a smartphone simply cannot perform, a good remote desktop client can work in a pinch. These allow you to use your home or office computer from anywhere in the world, giving you the power of a full-fledged desktop in the palm of your hand. When it comes to remote desktop clients, none are as simple and easy to use as Chrome Remote Desktop.Install Chrome Remote Desktop for free from the Google Play Store Install Chrome Remote Desktop from the Chrome Web Store To start, you'll need to have Google's Chrome web browser installed on your computer, and you'll also need to add the Chrome Remote Desktop plugin to the browser. Once that's done, simply install the Android app, then log into your account, and you'll be able to access your computer from anywhere.More Info: How to Install & Set Up Chrome Remote Desktop

12. Sunrise Calendar (No Longer Available)If you're going to be productive, you'll need to keep track of your upcoming appointments and meetings, so a calendar app is almost a necessity. Of the many choices you'll find on the Google Play Store, our personal favorite here at Gadget Hacks is Microsoft's Sunrise Calendar.Install Sunrise Calendar for free from the Google Play Store Sunrise Calendar can import your schedule from Google Calendar, Microsoft Exchange, and iCloud—and it can even connect with other popular services like Facebook, Foursquare, and Trello. Additionally, you can add calendars for common events like holidays and sports schedules, and there are over 25,000 of these to choose from.UPDATE: Sunrise has been removed from the Google Play Store, and will shortly stop working altogether worldwide on August 31st, according to the developers. Sunrise is now pretty much baked into Microsoft Outlook, so if you have an Outlook account, you may want to check that app out instead.
Honorable MentionsThe following productivity apps have similar functionality to some of the apps that made our full list, so they didn't quite make the cut. Nonetheless, they are still very useful in their own right, and may actually prove to be a better fit for your particular usage, so they deserve a mention.Google Keep - Notes and to-do lists that sync across all devices Wunderlist - Notes and to-do lists that sync between Android and iOS Google Calendar - Compatible with many online calendars BreakFree - Tracks smartphone usage time to increase productivity

How To: Play & Record Thousands of Worldwide Radio Stations on Android
Back in the '80s, recording live radio was as simple as popping a cassette tape into your boombox and pressing the record button. While we've come along way with regard to accessing radio stations thanks to websites and apps that stream live broadcasts over the internet, it's no longer quite as easy to record. So developer J. Walsh created an app that will allow you to listen to and record live radio broadcasts from all around the world. With access to thousands of radio stations and the ability to record at the press of a button, your thirst for radio content should be thoroughly satiated. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install World Radio FMWalsh's app is called World Radio FM, and it's available on the Google Play Store for free. Search the app by name to get it installed, or head directly to the install page at this link.

Step 2: Listen to Streaming Radio StationsWhen you first launch World Radio FM, you'll be taken to the app's side navigation menu. Tap the "All Radio" option from here to view all of the live streaming radio stations that the app has to offer. From here, just select any radio station and playback will begin almost immediately. The app lists all of the programming that has recently aired on this station to give you a good idea of the content it offers. When you're ready to stop playback, simply tap the "Stop" button at the top of the screen.

Step 3: Record Live RadioWhen a program or song that you'd like to record comes on, just tap the "Record" button. Recording will begin immediately, and the quality is crystal clear. To end your recording session, tap the "Record" button one more time. When you're ready to play one of your recordings, head to the side navigation menu. From here, select "Recordings," then simply tap your recording to play it. The actual MP3 files for these recordings can be found on your device's SD card in a folder named com.vinternete.wlradio. And because these are MP3 files, they'll be playable with just about all music player apps.In the end, World Radio FM brings back some basic old school recording functionality to our modern-era streaming radio stations. What are some of the radio programs that you've recorded? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.

#1. Use Native MethodsThe first approach may not be the most efficient, but some of us prefer doing things natively, refraining from relying on another third-party app. To do so, we can go two ways: your device's Application Manager or the Google Play Store.

Application ManagerEvery device is different, but all include some type of preference or option for apps, sometimes labeled "Application manager." Regardless of its name, enter these preferences to see a full list of the apps on your device. When the Application manager page comes up, you should be able to separate them by Downloaded, Running, or All. Use the 'All' tab to get an alphabetized list and start uninstalling your apps one by one.

Google Play StoreAlternatively, you can also do this through the Google Play Store. Launch the Play Store app and navigate to the side panel menu to access your apps. Once you see the list of all your installed apps, just select the app and tap "Uninstall." This will need to be repeated for every app you want to uninstall.

#2. Use a File ExplorerSince some of you may already have a file manager that you use, let's cover this option next. Although there are different file managers available on the Play Store, I'll be using my favorite, ES File Explorer File Manager.Using ES, access the side menu and tap the "App" option to view all the apps on your device. While on the App page, tap and hold one application in order to begin checking the multiple apps you want to uninstall, then tap "Uninstall" on the panel below. Be aware that although you can select multiple apps, you will need to confirm and tap "Uninstall" for each app individually.

#3. Use a Bulk Uninstaller AppThere are tons of "uninstaller" apps available that essentially all do the same thing, so for the simple reason of presentation, I'll be using Easy Uninstaller. Much like the file explorer, simply select the multiple apps you wish to remove, then tap "uninstall." Again, you will have to confirm each app.
#4. Hide or Remove BloatwareIn addition to the heaps of third-party apps you never use anymore, there are probably some stock applications (or bloatware) that you haven't used since day one and also want to remove. Although you may not be able to delete these while unrooted, you can hide them. But for all you root users, we'll be showing you how to uninstall them, too.
Non-Root MethodsTo hide or disable bloat on your device, I suggest checking out our guide on how to remove bloatware from any Android device.
But if you have a Samsung Galaxy, try out a different guide for disabling apps and bloatware on Galaxy devices.

Root Method (For System Apps Only; Otherwise Non-Rooted Is Fine)For this method, I'll be using the free app called ROM Toolbox Lite, which can uninstall stock apps as well. All you have to do is launch the app and select App Manager. On the page displaying all your apps, tap the page-looking icon below in order to check multiple apps from the list. With your apps selected, ready to be removed, tap the trash can icon and begin uninstalling. What's great about this method is that only one confirmation is required to delete multiple apps, not the equal number of selected apps. The root-only component comes in handy when dealing with system apps, including bloatware. If you scroll down the app list further, you'll notice a series of apps with a redish background—these are the system apps. Just like above, you can multi-select them, then either uninstall or "freeze" them, which is essentially disabling them. Though, tread carefully here, as you don't want to delete something that may be critical to your device's function. And that's it! You're now armed with several methods to clean up that app drawer and home screen. Let us know which one you prefer in the comments below.Follow Android Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Android tips.

News: Nextdoor Brings Private Social Networks to a Neighborhood Near You

Social networks like Facebook and Google+ are great for staying connected with family, friends and coworkers—even fans. But sharing and communicating with practically anyone in the digital realm has alienated us from most of the flesh-and-blood beings we see everyday—our neighbors. How well do you know your neighbors?A mere 43 percent of Americans know some or all of their neighbors' names, while the remaining 57 percent know only a few neighbors by name—or none at all. But this might change with a new social networking site called Nextdoor that's rolling out nationwide, helping to bridge the distance between the physical community around us in the digital age.Nextdoor provides free and private neighborhood websites that make it easy for locals to connect to one another to get help on anything in their area. You could gets tips on decent repairmen, ask about road closures, find out what time the park closes, discover a great babysitter, give away a few old movies, locate a lost pet—maybe even borrow a ladder from someone in the flesh. It's the best way to stay up to date on anything going on in your area. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
If you want to join your local community in an online community, just visit Nextdoor and input your email address and physical address to see if there's a thriving neighborly network in your area. If there is none yet, you could be the first to bring Nextdoor to your neighborhood, but it requires a certain kind of person:Community leaders (e.g. HOA officer or crime watch head)Parents who are very involved with the local schoolNeighbor who often organize community eventsIf you fit the bill, you could be the founding member of your local neighborhood's online faction. But if you want to wait, check back from time to time until one's started in your area. And rest assured that it's safe. All users must provide their name and address when signing up. Nextdoor then conducts a verification process to make sure the member fits into the boundaries of the online community's jurisdiction. One method is a code sent via a good old-fashioned postcard. Another method is signing up with a phone number or credit card linked to a home address. Existing members can also send official invitations to neighbors who might not know about the site. After the verification process, users have access to the tools available—neighborhood directory, map, events, marketplace, local service recommendations, nearby resources, etc. And members get to choose what information is displayed on their profiles. You can, but aren't required to reveal your email addresses, home and work phone numbers, and exact street address. If you want, you could just list your street name. What do you think about Nextdoor? Would you join another social network? Normally, I would say no, but Nextdoor provides an interesting way to get to know your physical surroundings a little bit better in the incorporeal kingdom of the Internet.
